Week 1: Embracing the Colorado Ranch Life
Arrival and Excitement
The journey to the Colorado Rockies was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and treacherous mountain passes marking our path to Clear Creek Ranch. But as we arrived at our destination, nestled amidst the rugged beauty of Granite, Colorado, our hearts swelled with anticipation and excitement for the weeks ahead. Here’s a glimpse into our first week, filled with snowstorms, wildlife sightings, and the warmth of newfound hot springs.
Thursday was the last leg of our journey with a drive up Battle Mountain, navigating road work and lane closures as we raced against the impending snowfall. But despite the challenges, we arrived at Clear Creek Ranch, greeted by a breathtaking landscape and the promise of a summer filled with adventure. Walking the grounds with our dogs, Milo and Otis, we marveled at the beauty even on a cloudy day, as snowflakes began to fall around us.
Friday morning meeting the ranch manager, was a highlight of our first day. His warm demeanor and wealth of knowledge instantly made us feel at home as we discussed the details of our stay.
Over lunch, we were treated to a spectacular sight from our RV kitchen table, as a herd of Bighorn Sheep came to drink from the creek, a reminder of the wild beauty surrounding us.
With work yet to begin, we took the afternoon to explore nearby Buena Vista, enjoying the charm of its streets and the warmth of the Deer Hammer distillery and The Buena Viking restaurant.
Waking up Saturday to a winter wonderland, we embraced the snow day with homemade tempeh bacon breakfast sandwiches and Bloody Mary’s with all the fixings. Despite the chill, the sun eventually broke through the clouds, revealing the majesty of the landscape around us.
During a walk along the creek, in a clearing, we spotted our first elk, their presence a reminder of the untamed wilderness that awaited us.
Sunday, as Mother’s Day dawned, we indulged in a leisurely breakfast before venturing to Cottonwood Hot Springs. Surrounded by snowy mountain cliffs and beautiful pools, we soaked in the therapeutic waters, entertained by the presence of Bighorn Rams perched on the rocky ledges above giving us a sparring show. It was a day of relaxation and rejuvenation, a perfect respite before the start of work on Monday.
Monday marked our official induction into ranch life, and Mike wasted no time in diving headfirst into his duties. He ventured into town to pick up vehicles, providing him with a glimpse of the breathtaking beauty that surrounds us. From the rugged terrain to the quaint charm of Poncha Springs, every mile reaffirmed our decision to embark on this adventure.
Back at the ranch, we enjoyed a hearty lunch of homemade Creamy White Bean soup, fueling Mike for the tasks ahead. With the arrival of the horses imminent, Mike’s afternoon was dedicated to cleaning up the barn and preparing for their arrival. It was a gentle introduction to ranch work, allowing him to ease into his new role with enthusiasm and grace.
Amidst chores, we were treated to a spectacle of nature as a herd of Rams grazed on the hillside beside the creek. Capturing their magnificence on camera, we marveled at the harmony of man and beast in this untamed wilderness.
Tuesday dawned with clear skies and a sense of tranquility that permeated the air. As I embarked on my morning walks with the dogs, I couldn’t help but be awestruck by the beauty that surrounded us. Setting out chairs by the creek, we savored our special coffee alternative, the sound of running water providing the perfect backdrop to our peaceful morning.
The remainder of the day was dedicated to preparing the fields for the horses’ arrival, along with some fence mending.
As evening descended, I treated Mike to a hearty plant-based meal of Chickpea meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, and cashew gravy. His tired smile and satisfied expression were a testament to the success of the dish, as we retired early, the day’s exertions catching up to him.
Wednesday greeted us with a sunny, frosty morning, providing the perfect backdrop for capturing the beauty of the pond and the mountains. The water, so clear and still, mirrored the surrounding landscape in perfect symmetry, a reflection of the serenity that enveloped us.
As I paused to take in the scene, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to call this place home, if only for a season.
As our first week on the ranch comes to a close, we find ourselves filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement for the adventures that lie ahead. From snowstorms to wildlife sightings, each day has been a testament to the beauty and wonder of life in the Colorado Rockies.
