Week 12 Adventures: From Aspen to Leadville

This week, back at the end of July, brought a mix of exploration, work, and some much-needed relaxation.

Peaceful morning on the pond

It began with a Sunday drive past Twin Lakes, through Independence Pass to Aspen, our first journey over a mountain pass from one valley to the other side of the Rockies. The drive was absolutely breathtaking, with the summit towering over 12,000 feet above sea level, well beyond the timberline.

While Aspen is a must-visit due to its fame, it wasn’t quite our favorite mountain town. It felt a bit too ritzy, with shops more akin to those on 5th Avenue in NYC rather than a quaint alpine village.

Monday saw Mike hard at work on the ranch while I went for a walk in the afternoon. With an incoming storm looming in the distance, the sky was a work of art, the clouds dramatic against the mountains. Thankfully, I made it back just before the downpour began.

There is a storm coming!

Tuesday’s morning stroll was equally magical, as the heavy mists blanketed the fields, turning them into a shimmering wonderland as the sunlight broke through.

Later on Tuesday, we dropped off our Jeep in Buena Vista for a much-needed new front suspension. While we were there, we stopped in for a yoga class at Jala Blu, which was just what we needed. Later that afternoon, we headed to Leadville, a town we haven’t spent much time in yet. We discovered Iris Moon Emporium, where Mike picked up some Runes, and then found the coolest little café called Before & After. True to its name, they offer indulgent coffees for your morning and refreshing cocktails for your afternoon.

Wednesday was a work-from-the-tent day, and I even managed to attend a Shakti School class online from our cozy outdoor setup. The tent has become such a peaceful spot, and we are loving the company of the countless hummingbirds that seem to have made it their home as well as well as the constant sound of the rushing water in the creek behind.

Thursday evening after work, we ventured to Cottonwood Hot Springs to meet a friend. Soaking in the hot springs was the perfect way to unwind after a long week. Later, we visited one of our favorite dinner spots, Crave, in Buena Vista. It’s been nice getting to know these local spots and being able to return multiple times during our stay.

Friday wrapped up the week with a bit of ranch work. Mike and I worked together to get hay for the mares, which is always a bit of an adventure. It involves making sure no horses escape and trying to prevent the hay bale from falling apart. Those mares sure do eat fast, so we’re definitely getting plenty of practice!
