September Highlights: A Month of Arrivals, Farewells and Beauty

This September was packed with amazing experiences, and while I could dedicate an entire blog post to each adventure, I’ll stick to the highlights for now, as we are set to leave the ranch tomorrow morning (Oct 1)!

New Arrivals and Trail Adventures

We welcomed two new horses to the ranch, Colby and Rebel. These beautiful creatures will now be the main riding horses. Mike had the pleasure of joining the horse trainer on their first trail ride around the property, getting them accustomed to their new home. It was an incredible experience to see them peacefully navigate the trails.

Exploring the Carolinas

I spent nine days in Whittier, NC, visiting a wonderful friend and her children. While there, I explored Asheville and took a nostalgic trip back to one of my favorite towns, Bryson City. I also enjoyed a serene walk along Deep Creek in the Great Smoky Mountains, surrounded by the calming sounds of nature and vibrant fall colors.

Bike Rides and Harley Trips

Mike enjoyed a bike ride with Milo, exploring some of his favorite local trails. Later in the month, he took his beloved Harley out for a solo trip to Salida, reveling in the crisp mountain air and scenic routes.

Close Encounters and Garden Goodies

We had an exciting visitor at the ranch—a young male moose! He spent about an hour lounging near the main pond, giving Mike the closest look he’s ever had at one of these magnificent creatures. The photos he captured are simply breathtaking.

On the gardening front, we had a modest harvest this year—Swiss chard, a mini pepper, one zucchini and lots of green onions. While it wasn’t a bountiful season, we savored every bite of what we did get. There’s something special about enjoying food straight from your own garden!

Ranch Work and Date Nights

This month, I also added ‘tractor driver’ to my resume! It was fun and rewarding to now be able to help with some of the heavier tasks around the property.

Look out!

We made time for date night too. We headed to Salida and stopped by the Vino Salida Wine Cellars in Poncha Springs. The venue was stunning, with perfect sunset views and live music setting the mood.  Afterward we went downtown to Currents restaurant, which not only has amazing food, but one of our new friends was our waitress too! It was a lovely evening spent sipping wine and enjoying each other’s company.

Spectacular Scenery and Outdoor Adventures

The second half of September brought glorious weather, and we made the most of it by hitting the trails. We took the horses out on several rides and even hiked a portion of the Colorado Trail. The changing colors of the aspen trees were spectacular, glowing golden among the dark green evergreens.

Full Moon Magic and Birthday Celebrations

We celebrated the full moon with a special evening at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. They hosted a water yoga class in the hot springs, and to our delight, it began with a sound bath featuring crystal bowls and a gong. It was a magical, peaceful experience.

On top of the world, ie. Cottonwood Pass

For Mike’s birthday, we took a drive through Cottonwood Pass to Gothic and Emerald Lake, soaking in the stunning views. We ended the day with a delicious dinner at The Wooden Nickel in Crested Butte, enjoying a fancy trout dish and Bison Prime Rib. We even brought home a slice of the best banana cream pie I’ve ever had!

New Fridge and a Final Farewell

After struggling with our fridge for over eight months, we finally got a new one installed—on Mike’s birthday, no less! The installation went smoother than expected, and we’re both thrilled not to have to worry about our food freezing or spoiling anymore.

It fit through the door!

We wrapped up the month with a birthday and going-away dinner at the lodge, hosted by the manager’s family. There was even a homemade birthday cake, adding a sweet touch to an already wonderful evening.

Happy Birthday Mike!

A Perfect End to a Perfect Summer

Our final day on the ranch was marked by a perfect trail ride. The weather was ideal, with no wind and the trees showcasing their full autumn splendor. We ended the evening with a cozy fire at the lodge, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of drumming by the creek under the dark new moon skies. Billions of stars twinkled above us, marking the end of a perfect summer on the ranch.

Cheers to a wonderful summer!

As we prepare to leave, we carry with us all these beautiful memories and look forward to new adventures on the horizon. Until next time!
