Week 11: A Week of Delights and Challenges

This week began with a special dinner service for the ranch owner and a couple of his friends. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the gracious owner of the land we love so much. We had a fun Saturday night working, chatting, and sampling the wonderful creations of the chef.

The week turned out to be very much about the beloved animals on the ranch. Monday was Farrier day, so all seven horses got their feet done, which takes a considerable amount of time. As the week progressed, one of the owner’s dogs contracted pneumonia and had to be separated from his littermate, necessitating a lot of washing and disinfecting. Simultaneously, the manager’s elderly dog took a turn for the worse and had to be rushed to the vet. Although the prognosis was grim, she made a remarkable recovery, much to the joy of her loving family.

Most weekdays, we spent quiet nights at home with our doggies, feeling grateful for their presence.

By the time the weekend arrived, we were ready for some fun. We decided to attend the Friday Social Hour Yoga at Jajablu in Buena Vista. After a strenuous but much-needed yoga class, we headed down to the Coyote Mezcal Bar in the South Main area of BV for some social time. It was great to meet the yoga class members outside the studio and get to know them better. Afterward, we went over to Eddyline Brewery for an amazing dinner of mussels and veggie burger.

Saturday began with our morning horse chores, followed by a trip into BV for the Farmer’s Market and breakfast at The Terrace on Main. The views from there are so nice! I just wish they served Mimosas before 11 am, but the French Press Coffee and mango juice were delicious!

On our way out of town, we stopped at the On the Hook Fish n Chips truck, which was in BV for the day. They use wild hook-caught Alaskan cod, and I’d been tracking their locations on Facebook. Finally, they were in our area, and they did not disappoint! It was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had, with tender fish and perfect batter. The view for lunch wasn’t bad either, as we stopped along the Arkansas River for a fishy picnic.

Overall, the week was filled with a blend of hard work, animal care, relaxation, and delightful experiences. We look forward to what next week has in store! Half way through the summer here, hard to believe.
